Using Electronic Devices on Board
Some electronic devices cannot be used on board aircraft because they may interfere with the aircraft navigation and communication systems. Others may be used with permission from the crew. Before using any electronic device, check with a crew member to find out if / when you can use it on board.
In Canada, passengers who use transmitting portable electronic devices (TPEDS), such as smartphones, e-readers, or tablets need to ensure they are in airplane mode before using them on an aircraft. Passengers may be permitted to use portable electronic devices (PEDs) such as cameras, electronic games and computers during the critical phases of flight (when an aircraft takes off, climbs, descends or lands), at the discretion of the air operator (in consultation with Transport Canada’s Advisory Circular).
Air operators must consider the size and weight of the PEDs that are acceptable to be secured either on their person or in an approved stowage location and implement procedures for stowage of all loose PEDs during the take-off, climb, approach or landing (as applicable) phases of flight in order to prevent personal injury from projectiles. Air operators may determine that a large PED, such as a full-size laptop computer, would need to be safely stowed in an approved carry-on stowage location.
Using a 3G or WiFi connection is currently permitted only during the taxi-in phase of flight. Some flights are allowed to use WiFi service, on a trial basis, in Canadian airspace.
Remove headsets or earphones connected to a portable electronic device for boarding, taxi, take-off, landing, deplaning and while walking to and from the aircraft. Why? Headsets and earphones make you less aware of safety hazards and less able to hear crew and ground personnel instructions, especially during an emergency.
WestJet, Air Canada passengers can use electronic devices in flight
Just a week after Transport Canada changed rules Air Canada and WestJet are already letting travellers can tap away on gadgets on flights.

WestJet Airlines says passengers are now free to use their portable electronic devices during all phases of flights, from takeoff to landing and everything in between.
The only requirement is that the devices, from smartphones to tablets and e-readers, must be set in non-transmitting mode, or flight mode.
The changes come just a week after Transport Minister Lisa Raitt announced the loosening of rules to give passengers more flexibility while in the skies, either to read a work memo or play a game or watch a movie.
Air Canada already implemented the changes last week on its fleet. “Our customers have been telling us they want the option to use their PEDs at all times on board our aircraft both for working and entertainment,” said Craig Landry, Air Canada’s vice president of marketing.
WestJet said it has completed comprehensive testing to ensure portable electronic devices do not cause interference with navigation or communication systems on the aircraft. Testing is now underway on WestJet Encore’s regional turboprop fleet of Bombardier Q400s.
“We have been hard at work to meet all necessary conditions required for the safe operation of PEDs on board our Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircraft,” said Bob Cummings, WestJet executive vice president, sales, marketing and guest Experience, in a news release Monday.
“Beginning today, all WestJet guests will have access to their favourite device for the duration of their flight, as long as it remains in airplane mode.”
Cellphones are considered electronic devices, but once the aircraft is in motion prior to take off, customers aboard aircraft will not be able to make cellular phone calls or send and receive wireless signals.
Previously, Canadian rules stipulated that passengers were only allowed to use these gadgets during what is called noncritical phases of flight, such as the cruising portion of a flight, or during the taxi-in phase, after landing, toward the airport gate.
The changes come, in part, to harmonize rules existing elsewhere including the United States and Europe which both relaxed their rules last year.
A special U.S. review panel determined most commercial airplanes can tolerate radio interference signals from portable electronic devices.
